Proust

American Farmer

I’m going to do Proust’s Questionnaire too, just because I’m curious to see what I decide.  I’m even more curious to see what changes.

What is your most marked characteristic?

- An intense desire for independence and self-reliance.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

- Integrity and a sense of honor.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

- Intelligence.  Dumb people bore me, and dumb women repel me.

What do you most value in your friends?

- Loyalty and generosity.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

- A lack of empathy, and arrogance.

What is your favorite occupation?

- Reading and learning.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

- A farm, a family, lots of books, and a quiet life away from it all.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

- Lack of freedom and self-determination.

In which country would you like to live?

- Iceland used to be on the list, until I learned the extent of their socialism.  New Zealand was on the list, and it gone for the same reason.  Now it’s the US or nothing.  There are no other options that I know of.

Who are your favorite writers?

- Albert Jay Nock, more to be determined.

Who are your favorite poets?

- I’m woefully uneducated in the realm of poetry.  That is something that will be corrected in the near future.  I’m going to say Shakespeare, knowing full well that this answer will change or be expanded.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?

- Atticus Finch, though this is another area that I expect to change as I fill in the gaps in my education.

Who is your favorite heroine of fiction?

- Geez, I can’t even think of one that really struck me.

Who are your favorite composers?

- Beethoven, without question.  Maybe Debussy or Chopin as a distant second.

Who are your favorite painters?

- Monet.

What are your favorite names?

- Carl, Aurelia

What is it that you most dislike?

- Unreliable people.  And whining.  I hate whining.

Which talent would you most like to have?

- The ability to read and comprehend faster.

How would you like to die?

- Quietly, at home, while reading a book in the shade of one of my apple trees.

What is your current state of mind?

- Resigned, optimistic, and frustrated, all at the same time.

What is your motto?

- Take the good, leave the bad.

Comments

  1. Try Kipling for poetry.  I like If, The Ballad of East and West, Gunga Din, The Betrothed, The Conundrum of Workshops, McAndrew’s Hymn, Tommy, The Female of the Species, I Keep Six Honest Serving Men, The Ladies, Mandalay, My Rival, Puck’s Song (best if you’ve been to Bateman’s or read the Puck stories), The Sons of Martha (must be an engineer thing), The ‘eathen (good lesson for messy kids.)

There are probably more, but I can’t think of them now.
